Brighton Security Centre, formerly known as F & R Payne and Son Pty Ltd, has been operating for over 50 years as a small family business in Elsternwick. Although the location has changed, their identity as a family-run locksmith service remains intact. In 2023, John Payne passed the reins to his daughter, Alison, and her security technician partner, Kael. In 2025, the company transitioned to an appointment-based storefront to better enable their locksmiths to assist customers on the road.

 

John joined the company in 1978 and completed an apprenticeship under his father, Ray Payne. Throughout his career, he has received numerous prestigious awards, including the MLAA Apprentice of the Year in 1981, the A.L. Chantry Memorial Award in 1997, and Life Membership of the MLAA in 1999, recognizing his contributions to the locksmithing industry. John has extensive experience in designing and maintaining complex master key systems and is credited with the original design of many significant master key systems in both government and private sectors.

 

Brighton Security Centre has been a member of the Masters’ Association of Australasia (MLAA) since its founding and has actively supported the organisation through many years of service on the Victorian Executive Committee and the National Board of Directors.
